ASSESSMENT

The First Appointment….

Right from the very start psychological therapy is a collaborative process. When we meet for the first time it is an opportunity for me to get an understanding of your needs and what you would like support with. This means that I will be curious about you and your life, asking you lots of different questions, so that I can formulate what is happening and why. This then helps me to come up with different options for treatment which we can then discuss and decide which fits for you. This is also likely to be influenced by any goals you might have. It is also an opportunity for you to see if you feel that I am someone that you feel comfortable talking to and would like to work with.

TREATMENT

Psychological Services

I offer a range of different psychological services to meet your individual needs.

Seeing the wood for the trees

One off Assessments

Sometimes an assessment can be all you need. A formulation may help you to see where you can make changes or try something different by identifying vicious cycles or patterns of behaviour.

Understanding yourself

Individual Therapy

Following an assessment, we will most likely do individual therapy. Working on your goals on an one to one basis using the most appropriate model for your needs.

Couples Therapy

Relationships go through difficult times and sometimes having someone else to talk things through with can enable you to hear each other and make positive changes.

Stress Management

The modern world brings a lot of benefits for us but also a lot of stress. Our minds are not designed for this world so finding alternative healthy ways to manage stress can improve our wellbeing.

Physical Health and Pain

Our physical and mental health are inextricably linked. Understanding the complexity of our mind and body and some of the ways that they interact with each other can help you to manage your health and pain in a different way.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a session last?

Therapy sessions last 50 minutes

How often are sessions?

Often people have weekly sessions to begin with and then may go to a session every two weeks or monthly as the therapy progresses. We can discuss what will work best for you.

How many sessions will I need?

This will vary depending on treatment and goals. I offer both short term and longer term therapy. We will regularly review progress and needs throughout therapy deciding together how many sessions to meet for. Often people have between 6-12 sessions.

Is everything we discuss confidential?

Confidentiality is paramount in psychological therapy and will be kept, however, if I am concerned that there is a significant risk of harm to yourself or others then I have a legal duty to break confidentiality and contact an appropriate body or person. Breaking confidentiality is not something that I would do lightly and I would endeavour to discuss it with you so that it was done with your knowledge and if possible consent.

Psychologists are required to have regular supervision to ensure the quality of their work and their continued development. Individual cases are discussed but details are anonymised and kept to a minimum as much as possible to ensure confidentiality is kept. Psychologists are also required to keep session notes which are held securely in line with GDPR and are kept only for as long as necessary.

What if I feel like the therapy isn’t working?

We will regularly review your progress in therapy and I would encourage you to discuss any difficulties with me as often this can help you move forward and identify barriers. Therapy is not an easy journey and like life there can be ups and downs. Often when people go into therapy they can find that they can feel worse before they begin to feel better as they start to face difficult things. The therapeutic relationship is fundamental and if either of us feel that the therapy really isn’t working then I will do my best to help you find something that will better meet your needs.
